The Pirate Bay sold – A New Beginning or the End ?

The World’s most popular Torrent site ‘The Pirate Bay’ has been sold out to a software company for $8 million. The company ‘Global Gaming Factory X’ will acquire it in August, 2009. Read the Official Blog post from The Pirate Bay for more info. regarding this.

The New owners have stated that they are going to change the business model of the site. The Pirate Bay is used for download Movies, Games and Software for free. But the new owners are likely to make it paid or remove all the pirated stuff that is more than 90% and keep only legal content on the site, that changes the meaning of the word ‘Pirate’. They have also stated that they will also pay Copyright holders for their stuff which is downloaded from the site. The site will also close its Trackers soon and would be no longer hosting torrent files.

So what does it mean! New Beginning or The END?

So, according to officials, The Pirate Bay is changing completely. We are yet not sure completely how they are going to manage the site now, but The Pirate Bay is saying it will not change, only owners are changed, read what it says -

“A lot of people are worried. We're not and you shouldn't be either! If the new owners will screw around with the site, nobody will keep using it. That's the biggest insurance one can have that the site will be run in the way that we all want to. And - you can now not only share files but shares with people. Everybody can indeed be the owner of The Pirate Bay now.”

Google and Facebook now gives Persian language support [Good news for Iran!]

A good news for all the people from Iran. At this very moment of Political Crisis of Iran, two Internet Giants Google and Facebook has just rushed to support Persian [Farsi] translation. Obviously this is going to have a huge effect on Iranian turbulent politics. For surely this will open up a new console to the Iranian youths to communicate with outer world and vice-versa.

Yesterday, Google first launched this service and it was announced under the Google Blog. According to  Franz Och, Principal Scientist

“We feel that launching Persian is particularly important now, given ongoing events in Iran. Like YouTube and other services, Google Translate is one more tool that Persian speakers can use to communicate directly to the world, and vice versa — increasing everyone's access to information.”

Obviously as it was released under a rush so it is not yet fully perfect. But Google team surely is working to fix any possible errors that may creep in. Also it is clearly mentioned there that it is under Alpha release. To try out the Google Translator now, click here.

Only after a couple of hours of this announcement, Eric Kwan announced on Facebook blog that they have also launched a Persian version of Facebook. On explaining it he said that

“Since the Iranian election last week, people around the world have increasingly been sharing news and information on Facebook about the results and its aftermath. Much of the content created and shared has been in Persian—the native language of Iran—but people have had to navigate the site in English or other languages.”

From the above discussion it is already cleared that Google and Facebook together have taken their step to stretch their hands towards the needier people of Iran. Lets just hope that youths there manages to take full advantage of it!

CrowdEye ~ New Twitter search engine by “Ken Moss” -ex-leader of Microsoft old search engineering

Google Adsense now allows you to change Font size of Ad units

Google adsense just announced on blog about introducing Font size choice, you can now select size of fonts of your Ad units. Till now Publishers were not able to change font size and default font size is slightly small, you can now select your preferred font size from available options. Publishers were already allowed to change font faces and with this new addition, you can fully customize your Ad unit to math your template and increase performance of Ads. Font sizes will apply to Ad title and body.

So What should be your Font size choice?

Mainly it depends on your blog template and the ad placement but According to Adsense official resources and most of the publishers, ads with bigger fonts perform perform better, Adsense is also soon going to set ‘medium’ font size as default to increase performance of ads. Does Facebook also needs Verified Profiles like Twitter?

Before adding the Custom Profile URLs feature, vanity URLs were only available to Celebrities or big brands like Firefox or Maria Sharapova etc. Users were sure about originality of these Public profiles. But with this feature, all users get this feature to have custom Profile URLs and no one is sure about someone's Profile. Many users have selected Profile URLs that are similar to celebrities or Brands.

The problem is similar to Twitter, Twitter solved it by adding ‘Verified Profiles’ feature, which is not available to all yet, but they will roll it out soon to the public. Facebook again needs to copy Twitter and add ‘Verified Profiles’ feature to save the users from Fake profiles of celebrities or brands.

Facebook is perhaps already aware of this threat. http://facebook.com/obama will redirect you to Original Barack Obama page. But it is not possible to redirect all similar URLs to Original page, it can be only saved by Verifying Profiles or something similar to that.

Twitter Launches Verified Accounts [Currently for high profiles only]

Twitter has finally launched the “Verified Accounts” Feature. Now it is giving a Verified Account tag to some users mainly to high profile users like celebrities, athletes, musicians etc. Note that this feature is currently under “Beta” stage. As said by twitter

“To prevent identity confusion, Twitter is experimenting (beta testing) with a 'Verified Account' feature. We're working to establish authenticity with people who deal with impersonation or identity confusion on a regular basis. Accounts with a are the real thing!”

So currently this feature is available to users like Oprah and Diddy and so [Thanks to webpronews]… Below is a screenshot of how their profile looks…

Pros and Cons:

The real benefit of this feature is that we will get to know about the actual profiles of celebrities and High profile users. So while clicking on the follow button we will not get confused thinking whether it is a real profile or not. Also according to twitter

“With this feature, you can easily see which accounts we know are 'real' and authentic. That means we've been in contact with the person or entity the account is representing and verified that it is approved. (This does not mean we have verified who, exactly, is writing the tweets.)”

But on the other hand this feature Currently is limited to very short number of users. To explain that twitter has included

“This also does not mean that accounts without the 'Verified Account' badge are fake. The vast majority of accounts on the system are not impersonators, and we don't have the ability to check 100% of them. For now, we've only verified a handful of accounts to help with cases of mistaken identity or impersonation.”

Google’s Micro blogging Search Engine is going to hit the market Soon

Yes! You have heard it right! Google the king of search engines is soon going to launch its new Micro blogging Search engines for Twitter and other sites. Micro blogging has acquired much significance in this world of Web 2 and it is now a popular way for people to share real-time information with others [or better say whole world]

Twitter no doubt is the most used Micro blogging service these days but one of its drawback is search algorithm. Although previously we have talked about the improvement of twitter search engine but still it sorts the results by date not relevance. There are services like Tweetfind, Twingly which try to sort them but those are not that good. So if now Google is putting its hand onto it we can really expect something big.

“Much like Google Blog Search, Google's micro blogging search service will sort the results by relevancy and it also be integrated with Google's web search engine: the keywords that are frequently used in recent posts will trigger a MicroBlogsearch universal search group.”

Also there has been a Hint on this upcoming Google Service in Google’s Translation console [where Google harvests voluntary human translation services they use to make their product multilingual] which is quoted below:

"Recent updates about QUERY. This is the MicroBlogsearch Universal result group header text. A Micro blog is a blog with very short entries. Twitter is the popular service associated with this format."

While discussing the significance of Twitter for Google, Marissa Mayer [search product chief] has said:

“"What's really happening in Twitter is that there are a lot of clues in it in terms of what's happening that's interesting overall. So we are interested in being able to offer, for example, micro-blogging and micro-messaging in our search. Particularly in Blog Search and possibly in Web Search, but we don't have any particular plans to announce.”

Youtube enables linking accounts to Facebook & Twitter. Auto-post Videos to your accounts

YouTube just enabled to link your Twitter, Facebook and Google Reader. You can connect your Facebook or Twitter account in seconds and it will auto-share your uploads to Twitter or Facebook accounts. Sharing YouTube videos on Twitter and Facebook was already easy but this update has made it much simpler.

For connecting accounts, go to your Upload page and select from the available services. It will open a new window asking you for verification, you may need to login to the services first to continue, Click on ‘Allow access’ and enjoy the feature.

Facebook today announced to allow custom profile URLs from May 13, The feature was first available only to Celebrities and Big brands. Now you would be able to choose a custom profile URL like www.facebook.com/yourname. On Saturday, you will get a notification on your homepage to choose a username for your Profile.

Facebook just made another step to stop the Twitter Mania, Brands, Celebrities and bloggers are using Twitter because it allows them to use a custom username which gives ability to share it with others and is easy to remember. With this new addition, Bloggers and brands will surely return to Facebook making their Profiles a Brand.

Google Chrome Finally launched for Mac and Linux ~ Currently on dev channel

So finally the wait is over. Google Chrome one of the growing successful browser on this Web Industry has finally been released for Mac and Linux users. Until now of course, Google’s open source browser has been a Windows Only product. But now Google coder team have worked upon rebuilding some chrome components to move it beyond Windows. These components includes, but not limited to – new graphics interface, sandbox isolating different processes from each other etc. Obviously it is not the stable version. In fact it is ChromIUM the developer’s version. So it means it is quite incomplete. You will not be able to view YouTube videos, change your Privacy settings, set your search providers and so…

So what to do now?

Nothing! If you are a Mac or Linux user then just sit back and wait for the final release. If you like to download and test this incomplete, potentially crashing software [Just for FUN maybe!] then download and install from here

Of course in this developer’s stage we won’t be able to install plug-in and change privacy settings, but considering this to be developer’s stage it is quite attractive. Also according to Shankland…

“Even though only released for the experimental crowd, the new versions are a big step forward for the browser. First, the versions will plug into Google's auto-update service that automatically downloads new versions. Second, the products bear the Google Chrome brand, not just the Chromium label of the only incarnations available until now. And third, a much larger audience will be helping Google debug the code through automated crash reports of the new versions”

He also included that…

“I gave the Mac OS X version a 40-minute whirl and was delighted to find one of my favorite Windows features--fast launch. Pages loaded reasonably quickly, too, though a few times the browser seemed to hang while loading one.

The only pages that didn't work for me were Yahoo Mail, which told me I had an unsupported browser, and those that required Flash. But a number of complicated JavaScript-based sites, including Gmail, Flickr Organizer, and Google Docs, had no troubles.”

So over all we can say the developer’s version to be pretty good.

Official Release date:

Well there is no clear indication from the Chromium developer yet. In fact according to Mike Smith and Karen Grunberg, Product Managers of Chromium project:

“but whatever you do, please DON'T DOWNLOAD THEM! Unless of course you are a developer or take great pleasure in incomplete, unpredictable, and potentially crashing software.”

Clearly indicates this is at the very beginning of the production stage. But if we look at the past and the time in which Google Chrome for Windows came out of beta stage, we can assume that Chromium dev will get released to a beta chrome build within 1 month or so! Also there is a clear indication from the manager:

“Meanwhile, we'll get back to trying to get Google Chrome on these platforms stable enough for a beta release as soon as possible!”

Orkut is Down! Yes Orkut is not working again!

Many people are just able to see a blank space on Orkut. This fault is observed on some browsers on all the systems in all the countries. Orkut is down! Its been more than 3 hours now. It has been down before read this post. Bugs Bugs and more Bugs...we hope its not hacked!

UPDATE: There are compatibility issues due to some changes in Orkut. Issue has been raised in the Orkut Forum, hopefully it get fixed soon. Orkut is working perfectly, it was not down as we thought earlier.

Opera 10 Beta releases with New features and 40% faster browsing

Opera just launched the Beta release of its desktop web browser Opera 10. It was firstly available as Alpha release. Go here to the main page to Download.

Faster Browsing even on Slow connections

Opera claims its latest release to 40% faster than previous versions and other browsers, Opera is faster as compared to its previous versions, IE or other browsers but it again fails to beat Google chrome and Firefox 3 in terms of Speed and stability.

Visual Tabs

This is a very cool feature, you can see thumbnails of opened tabs by dragging the handle under tabs to see previews.

Customize Speed Dials

Select your favorite or most visited sites to be displayed on home page, it also provides you to select background image of speed dials.

HOW TO: Auto Login to Facebook with Google/Yahoo Account

Almost all internet users are having a Google account or Yahoo account to which they are always logged in. Ever wanted to Skip login process to Facebook if you are already logged in your Google or yahoo account? Facebook itself gives you this feature. You can login with your Google,Yahoo, OpenID or Myspace account but as most used account is either Google or Yahoo, so Linking only Google or Yahoo is beneficial. So make your web life simpler with this feature of Facebook. 

For enabling the feature, Go to your Facebook settings page and follow these steps"

1. Navigate to the Account Settings page and look for Linked Accounts.

2. Click on change button and select your Account e.g. Google, Yahoo, OpenID etc.

3.It will open a new window for verification and click on allow.

NOTE: You must be first logged into that account to which you are linking to.

4. Check the page, you will now see your Linked account there.

BING opens with a Bang, New search Engine to beat Google

Microsoft’s Latest search engine BING is now open for all, Microsoft’s old search Live.com is now redirecting users to Bing.com, actually there is no much difference in search results in Bing and live, but Bing has many good features too that make it unique, better and give us a reason to use it, Bing is currently in Beta phase, it is rolling out new features slowly and we can assume of new and better search results in the near future. So what’s new in Bing that make it different from Live.com and better than Google ?

The Bing Preview Box

It is a very useful feature for users but it can become a headache for site owners , because you can see contents of page and some other links containing Contact information without going to that site, so it is great option for all normal users.

Better Search Results

It shows search results in a better way, Searching for a search term gives various useful links related to the search term, For example if we search for Blakut, unlike other search engines it shows links to our blog, Twitter network, Facebook page and other links on first page making it easier for users to get all links at first page without repeated results.

Search Suggestions

As soon as you start typing in search box, it suggests some search terms related to the keywords you are typing, though it needs to improve a lot to compete with Google’s search suggestions.

If you are outside USA, then it shows you regional search page (See the above image), but these pages do not have all features currently like saving and sharing search history etc. For using full version, Go here and select your language as English – USA.

Sign in to get even more features

Sign in using your Windows login (Hotmail or Live mail) and get access to more features like saving History, getting access to Bing Forums/Blogs , where you can discuss with other Bing users.
