With reference to Gmail Google Group post, Gmail would now be facing the following restictions on emailing.

1. 500 messages per day (i.e., you can hit 'Send' a maximum of 500 times)
2. 500 unique recipients per message
3. 2000 total emails per day (for example, you could send one message to a group of 500 people four times)
4. Google will temporarily disable your account if you send a message to more than 500 recipients.
5. Google will temporarily disable your account if you send a large number of undeliverable messages
6. You can only send a message to up to 100 people at a time if you use POP or IMAP as per the Help Center
   

Google explains that these restrictions were created to fight against spam and to prevent abuse. The same rules are enforced for Google Apps users, as well.

[HELP] Lost Old Firefox Bookmarks after Firefox 3 Upgrade

If you previously tried a Firefox 3 pre-release version such as Firefox 3 Beta, went back to Firefox 2, and have now upgraded to Firefox 3, any bookmarks you added since you went back to Firefox 2 will be missing if you used the same profile for both versions.

How to recover?

1. Choose Start → Run
2. Type in %APPDATA%
3. Press OK. A Windows Explorer window will appear.
4. In the Windows Explorer window, choose Mozilla → Firefox → Profiles. Each folder in this folder is a profile on your computer.
5. Open the Firefox profile folder and delete (or rename) the "places.sqlite" file and the localstore.rdf file.
6. Open the bookmarkbackups subfolder and remove any .json files to another location (or rename).
7. Restart Firefox.
   

Firefox 3 will then automatically import the bookmarks from "bookmarks.html" in the profile folder.

Nithin Sajja arrested for posting derogatory content about Sonia

Nithin Chkravarthi Suresh Sahha (22), was arrested by Pune police on Saturday for posting derogatory content about Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi in Orkut Communities.

Cyber Crime Cell contacted Google and procured details of the Email address and the IP address of the person using that email, who had posted the offensive message in the Community "I hate Sonia Gandhi" It was found that email was nithin.sajja@gmail.com and IP address located to Sharan Apartment, Begum Peth in Hyderabad .

Previously Rahul Vaid was arrested under section 292 of Indian Penal Code and section 67 of the Information Technology Act because he created a profile and then posted content in vulgar language about Sonia Gandhi in the community. (Click on the links to see the laws)..

Google has recieved a court order to remove the content under the Removals Policy which clearly states

"We will not remove unless provided with a court order:
1) Personal attacks or defamation
2) Shocking or distasteful imagery or language
3) Political or social satire"

A police team comprising of assistant commissioner Netaji Shinde, sub inspector Sajay Tungar, naik Balwant Mankar and constables Sunil Shelke, Navnath Walke nabbed Sajja at his residence on Saturday afternoon.

Orkut's Popularity is declining

Google Trends is a very handy tool, you can track Web trends over time with this tool. It allows users to track searches over city, region or country to see when certain topics were of more interest to browsers. Users can also take a look at Hot Trends which displays the most popular searches over the past hour.

Orkut currently ranks 4th in terms of Popularity (determined by Search Volume Index) in comparision to all Web Social Networks. It currently ranks below FaceBook, MySpace and Hi5.

You can see a declining trend from late 2007 to early 2008 for Orkut. FaceBook 's popularity has increased exponentially during this time inspite of it being rated as The Slowest Social Networking Website & MySpace has been redesigned this week. Orkut had the highest average user engagement (181 minutes per visitor) which means Orkuter's are more addicted to Orkut than Facbookers to Facebook.

What can be the reasons?

Firstly, Orkut has made several attempts to catch up like introducing OpenSocial and Orkut Apps which didn't quite work as well. Majority of the apps are buggy/don't work, don't look good and often take forever to load.

Secondly, Orkut is considerably slow in releasing new features in comparision for the demand for new features causing inconvenience to the members.

Finally, Orkut has closed access to members using GeoLocks for increasing the security and privacy of Profiles. This was done because past few years there was a nuisance of people using javascript codes to open locked albums, and Flooding, Fake Profiles, Harassment, stealing cookies , Spamming Communities and Phishing. Currently they are Suspending Accounts and Deleting Communties. Well they took care of the nuisance but restricted many users freedom who were not involved in such activity, or they were victims.

This may have resulted to many users giving up on Orkut and changing to other networks.

Now the question comes, what's Google's next move?

1. Type about:config into Firefox's address bar and click the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button.
2. Right-click anywhere. Choose New>Boolean. Make the name of your new config value extensions.checkCompatibility and set it to false.
3. Make another new boolean pair called extensions.checkUpdateSecurity and set the value to false.
4. Restart Firefox.

Not only Orkut Toolbar Addon would start working, all the other FF2 addons which are incompatible with FF3 would start working.

We are seeing a growing trend towards providers integrating IM,Social Networks and Emails are trying to integrate all the services. Example: Orgoo is still in its infancy stage and few people are getting access to it through invites only.

Gmail App is a step towards integration of Google Services.


Gmail App Review:

Firstly, I was concerned if I had to Login, as you have to be extra cautious to enter your login details. This App logs in automatically.

Secondly I was unsure about it's speed. It loads reasonably fast.

Finally I found quite a few bugs in the display and login.I was logged in my alternate profile..
I hope they fix them soon. Overall It's a value added App.
